Securing your next embedded engineering role

Recruitment Consultant Rob Taylor looks at what engineers need to do to take the next step in their career.

It’s possibly never been a better time to be an embedded engineer. The market for experienced professionals is hot, and demand is only increasing as companies begin to advance and adopt new and emerging technologies. Embedded systems, IoT, integrated machine learning, and cloud computing are now being adopted across a wide array of industries, from improving process on the factory floor to new consumer products.

The supply for qualified talent isn’t keeping up with the growth in demand, with The National Science Foundation reporting that the incremental increases in engineering graduates isn’t sufficient for growth of the economy. The NSF also highlights that nearly 30% of engineering and science degree holders are over 50, and therefore likely to retire in the next 15 years.

This demand has led to a war for qualified and experienced talent, meaning that engineers looking for their next role will have plenty of opportunities.

The global market for embedded systems is predicted to reach $8 billion by the end of 2022, this makes the market ripe for growth, meaning for companies, hiring for talent is critical to success.

Here’s a few tips to help you secure your next embedded engineering role:

Upskilling

With the proliferation of new and emerging technologies, engineers with skills and understanding of IoT, cyber security, AI and Machine Learning will be highly sought after. Take part in projects where you can learn new skills in these fields.

Grow your network

Spend time nurturing your wider network, both online and in person. You never know who could have an opportunity in the future so, even if you aren’t ready to move now take the time to connect with people for future opportunities.

Optimize your resume

In order to stand out from other engineers it’s worth crafting your resume to ensure it has maximum impact. Organize it strategically, with a clear summary. Don’t forget to emphasize soft skills like teamwork, communication, and liaising with stakeholders etc. Employers really value these skills, as well as clear evidence of your achievements.
