Scaling Without Compromise: How Engtal Has Grown While Protecting What Matters
Growth is exciting, but scaling a business successfully means making sure the things that made it successful in the first place don't get lost along the way.
Engtal CEO and Co-Founder Christopher Atiyah recently sat down with ValiantCEO to discuss Engtal's growth journey and the lessons he's learned while scaling the business.
Since launching Engtal in 2017, Chris and Co-Founder Mark Znowski have grown the company from a small Chicago team into a national recruitment platform with specialized brands across engineering, technology, construction, financial markets, renewable energy, accounting, finance and legal.
For Chris, one of the biggest lessons has been understanding that the way you operate as a small business can't stay the same as you grow.
“If you are a 10-person business trying to get to fifty people, you need to operate like a 50 person business.”
That means putting the right people and processes in place early. As a company grows, leaders have to become comfortable delegating responsibility, trusting their teams and building systems that allow the business to operate without every decision going through one person.
But growth isn't just about infrastructure. It's also about protecting culture.
At Engtal, that has meant remaining intentional about who joins the business, investing heavily in training and development and maintaining the standards that have driven the company's success.
Chris also emphasizes that scaling doesn't mean leaders should become disconnected from their customers or market. Staying close to clients and understanding the challenges they're facing continues to play an important role in how Engtal makes decisions as the business grows.
Ultimately, sustainable growth isn't about expanding as quickly as possible. It's about building the people, processes and culture that allow a business to grow without compromising what made it successful.
